One sleepless night, Mathieu sets off into the mountains. He hikes as far and as high as he can, until he is utterly exhausted. The next day, Félix, a farmer, reports him missing to the police. Viviane, Mathieu's mother, arrives in the valley to expedite the search, but to no avail. Rumors begin to circulate, amplified by the local press.
